Ye are gods

Hot seat!

In the course of delivering a sermon recently in the church that I pastor, I made the statement, ‘ye are gods.’ When we came back that afternoon after the service, my 8yr old daughter asked me, “Daddy, we are human beings, not gods! How can you say that we are gods? What do you mean?”

I was delighted to know that my sweet 8yr old was listening to my sermons! I was also proud of her for having the intelligence and courage to confront me over an issue I raised during a sermon. But I was momentarily at a loss on how to explain such a profound idea to her. How do I explain to an 8yr old that human beings are gods? Whatever explanations I give must be both credible and simple.

Fortunately, the right thought hit my mind at that very moment – a fundamental concept that even she unquestioningly accepts. That concept is the fact that we are the children of God.

So I asked her, “Do you believe that we are children of God?”
“Yes,” she replied.”
“Good!” I said, “now let me ask you some questions.”
With that I proceeded to ask her several questions to which she gave the right answers.
“When a rabbit gives birth, what’s it that it gives birth to?” I asked, “a rabbit,” she answered.
“When a monkey gives birth, what’s that that is born?” I asked again, and again she replied, “a monkey.”
I asked the same question about a goat and a human being and she replied accurately.
“Well, my daughter,” I continued, hoping that the final question will do the job, “when a God gives birth, what’s supposed to be born?” To my relief, she answered, “a god.”
Like someone who had just won a jackpot, I proceeded to make my point to my girl, “If we are the children of God, then we have the nature of God, and that means that we are gods. Do you understand?”
“Yes daddy,” she smiled and ran off!

Ye are gods

Now, come to think of it, I didn’t really manufacture the concept of humans being gods; its a biblical and godly concept.

“Is it not written in your Law, ‘I have said ye are gods’?…” ~ Jesus Christ, John 10:35

According to the bible, human beings are created in the image of God. This is something lots of people know but never actually get to ponder over.

If mankind is created in the image of God, then you and I are partakers of the divine nature. That means that we have the potential and capacity to manifest the attributes and powers of God as daily realities in time and space. I know this idea might be too much for some folks to take in to their minds, particularly when you’ve been programmed to look down on yourself, to think of yourself as worthless, and to think of yourself as fortunate enough to merely exist and so just manage to get by.
Nevertheless, it is still true that ‘ye are gods.’

Creativity

The most basic attribute of a god is creativity – the capacity to manifest reality out of apparent nothingness. I came to this conclusion after a careful analysis of the timeline of God’s revelation about himself in the Holy Scriptures. The first attribute of God revealed in the Holy Scriptures is that of a Creator.

I find it particularly interesting that before ever God revealed Himself as a Father, Judge, or anything else, He first of all manifested as a Creator.

This is quite significant because it embodies the fact that fundamental to God is the attribute of Creativity.
Creativity – the capacity to manifest reality out of apparent nothingness – is the basic attribute of the divine nature.

Since we are the offsprings of God, and according to Jesus Christ, ‘ye are gods,’ basic to our nature is the capacity to manifest reality out of apparent nothingness! It’s within your divine nature and powers to do this.
